HCDA Contractor Begins Repair Work in Kakaako Waterfront, Makai Gateway, and Kewalo Basin Parks

The Hawaii Community Development Authority is making much-needed repairs and improvements to the Kakaako Waterfront, Makai Gateway, and Kewalo Basin Parks starting May 2010 with projected completion by January 2011. 

Work in the park has started with the demolition of the fire-damaged comfort station at the Makai Gateway Park.  Once the comfort station is demolished, the area will be grassed over to provide a larger playing field. 

Repairs will be made to the spalling and chipped concrete at the seawalls, sea stairs, picnic tables, benches, light posts, paving tiles, drinking fountains, charcoal bins, and pavilion columns.  Electrical repairs will be made to the existing light fixtures, outlets and wiring. 

Security gates will be added to all comfort stations.  Deteriorated wooden boundary markers will be replaced with metal horseshoe vehicle barriers.  Additionally, new shower facilities will be installed at the Kakaako Waterfront and Kewalo Basin Parks including adding a new shower facility location at Kewalo Basin Park. 

For the first couple of months the work will focus on the demolition of the comfort station and the concrete repairs.  Following it will be the electrical repairs, installation of the security gates and new showers. The work will be completed with the repair of the sea stairs and railings during the fall and winter months, when it is anticipated that the waters will be calmer.
